Bob Womack Collection

Biographical Sketch

Bob Womack is a professor in the Educational Leadership Department at Middle Tennessee State University , where he has taught for more than 36 years. Womack earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 and his Master of Arts degree in 1952 from Middle Tennessee State College. In 1956, he completed his doctorate in Education Doctorate at George Peabody College . Womack is a recognized expert in two areas outside teaching-the history of the Tennessee Walking Horse and the history of the Civil War.

Scope & Content

The Bob Womack Collection consists of a variety of research materials that Dr. Womack collected during his career. The three main categories in the collection are the Civil War, the history of evolution, and equestrian history.  The files consist primarily of newspaper and magazine clippings and photocopies of primary source materials (such as letters and diaries) on dozens of subtopics.   Many files also include Dr. Womack’s own correspondence regarding these topics.

Subgroup Descriptions

Civil War Subgroup

Files in the Civil War Subgroup include Dr. Womack's correspondence, copies of articles, and copies of primary source materials on a variety of topics related to the Civil War, notably battle sites.  Battles covered in this series include Franklin , Murfreesboro , Nashville , Shiloh , and Stone’s River. The Subgroup also contains files on soldiers and other people who lived during the Civil War period, as well as materials related to historic places and information regarding re-enactments of the Civil War.  Also included are the texts of lectures and articles that Dr. Womack prepared using the research material collected here.

Evolution Subgroup

This subgroup contains information on debates over creationism and evolution, including articles and newspaper clippings, files on fossils, and religious sources related to evolution. In addition, the subgroup has materials related to the Scopes Trial in Dayton , Tennessee .

Equestrian Subgroup

This subgroup contains information regarding horse auctions, the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration and materials on controversies and scandals in the horse industry. In addition, the subgroup has information on breeds, horse shows, and people involved in breeding and showing horses.
