SCOPE AND CONTENT
 

The Louisa Daniel Rutledge Collection spans the years 1883 to 1924.  Her diary, begun in 1899, records her thoughts about her life and information about her parents and grandparents.  The collection also includes two family photographs from 1924, a small amount of correspondence, two wills, and miscellaneous family papers.

 

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

 Series 1: Diary, 1899-1904

Includes Louisa Daniel Rutledge's original diary, a direct transcription of the diary, and a “normalized” transcription of the diary.  Dr. John Butler Rutledge, a bibliographer and Department head at UNC-Chapel Hill Library, performed the transcriptions.

 Series 2:  Correspondence, 1899-1923

Letters written by or to Louisa Daniel Rutledge, along with transcriptions by James Thomas Rutledge.

 Series 3: Miscellaneous Family Papers, 1883-1921

Includes Louisa Daniel Rutledge's obituary, copies of Sam Rutledge’s will and Jack Daniel’s  will, some financial information for Mrs. Rutledge and her children, and other miscellaneous documents.  The copy of the obituary was provided by James Thomas Rutledge.
