The Albert Gore Research Center has a number of collections that contain materials relating to the home front experience of World War II. Most of the collections are from the Middle Tennessee region.

Adeline King Collection
Adeline King was a writer from Smyrna, Tennessee,  employed for most of her career by the Nashville Bridge Company as secretary to the chairman and president. Two major series in this collection, "Writings" and Na-Bri-Co News, relate to the topic of the home front during World War II. The "Writings" series includes a file of "Letters to Servicemen" — informal newsletters that King sent twice a month for nearly two years to American servicemen from the Smyrna community. During the early months of 1945, when combat was stepped up in all areas, she issued the bulletin every week.  Part of each letter was devoted to news from home and reports of activities of various people in the town of Smyrna. Another and larger part was used to exchange news from all men in the service from the community. It also included quotations from their letters to King, messages sent to her for relay to other men on the list, and mention of promotions, distinctions, or honors that came to them. In addition, King offered some humorous tales in her letters to brighten the spirits of the soldiers who were experiencing the horrors of war.

The Na-Bri-Co News was a Nashville Bridge Company publication that King wrote for and edited from 1946 to 1969. Over the years she saved every issue, including a few issues published before her employment. Eleven issues discuss the war efforts, employees being recruited and stationed overseas, and employees returning home.

Jean Kiger Collection
The Jean Kiger Collection consists of two scrapbooks and assorted documents that primarily pertain to Kiger's time as Assistant Provost General at the Smyrna Air base during World War II. The "Smyrna Air Base" series contains materials on the war. One notable part of the collection is the "Army Hit Kit of Popular Songs" that was issued monthly by the Special Services Division Army Service Forces, U.S. Army. The series also contains clippings that include cartoons about the war, an article on the Smyrna Army Air Field employees mourning the loss of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and an article entitled "Japanese Surrender Draws Wild Response".

Eugene H. Sloan Collection
Eugene H. Sloan was a journalist and reporter for the Lebanon Democrat and later was a "stringer" for the Nashville Banner. His by-lined column "Somewhere in Tennessee" was the basis for the book he wrote on World War II maneuvers in middle Tennessee. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Tennessee State Guard and was later accredited as a war correspondent by the U.S. Army. Relevant materials include more than one hundred World War II maneuver photographs taken by Sloan, and his book entitled With Second Army: Somewhere in Middle Tennessee

Quintin Miller Smith Collection
Quintin Miller Smith served as President of Middle Tennessee State University from 1938 to 1958. During World War II, Smith was the coordinator of the Civilian Defense Council of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County. The Civil Defense series contains council meeting minutes, emergency plans that were to be followed in case of enemy invasion, and lists of the people involved. The "Newspaper" series also includes relevant items.  One article in the series, entitled "TSC Steps Up Program to Fit Wartime Needs," discusses five men from the college who had gone into the armed services. Another article, entitled "Veteran Education Setup for State Being Planned," discusses the educational needs of veterans returning from the war .

Community Collection
The Community Collection contains a variety of materials primarily pertaining to Rutherford County. Items of note include letters from a local serviceman named John Doyle to his wife. Other items in this series include a World War II Basic Field Manual on Infantry Drill Regulations and a Soldier's Handbook discussing uniform and clothing care, arm and hand signals, and steps and marching procedures.

James Gillespie Collection
Gillespie was an aviator at the Smyrna Airfield.  His collection includes numerous photographs of the Smyrna Airfield. The collection also contains aviation magazines from the 1940s such as AERO Digest, Aviation Magazine and Flying.

Walter King Hoover Collection
Walter King Hoover was a funeral director and history buff from Smyrna, Tennessee. He published a book entitled A History of the Town of Smyrna, Tennessee, based on his memories and years of collecting historical materials on various aspects of the town's heritage. Two major series in the collection relate to World War II. The first is called "War" and includes items such as an article about processed foods rationing instructions to retailers and wholesalers and ration receipts. The second series is "Federal Projects," which contains Smyrna Airbase maps from the 1940s.

Middle Tennessee State University Collection
The MTSU Collection contains material relating to the campus during the war including, yearbooks, photographs, and issues of the campus newspaper, The Sidelines, from the 1940s. The photographs are particularly notable because they depict the College Training Detachment (C.T.D.), a military training unit stationed on the campus.
