The Albert A. Gore,
Sr. Research Center has several collections that have newspaper clippings that
pertain to the history of Jefferson and Jefferson Springs, Tennessee.
The Hoover Collection (Walter King)
- Communities Series: Contains newspaper clippings and articles from The Nashville
Banner and The Rutherford Courier that provide insights into the
Jefferson Springs recreation area during the early 1900s. Some of the articles
discuss the dance hall, the bowling alleys, the pool hall and the campsites that
were near the river and the summer resort. In addition, some of the clippings address the demise of
Jefferson Springs as a vacation destination for mid-state residents. These
items are located in the "Jefferson" folders.
- Federal Projects Series:
It has items pertaining to Jefferson and
Jefferson Springs. Most of the articles in this series discuss the creation
of Percy Priest Lake by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the 1960s and the
flooding of the Jefferson Springs and Old Jefferson communities. These items
are located in the "Federal Projects-Percy Priest Lake" folder 1.
The Pittard Collection (Homer and Mabel)
- Communities Series: The Pittard
Collection has some articles related to the history and development of the
Jefferson community in the "Jefferson, Tennessee" folder. The most notable
article, entitled "Robert Weakley's Dream--The Story of Jefferson"
(Murfreesboro Daily News Journal, January 30, 1972), discusses the
rise and fall of Jefferson as the Rutherford County seat.
