SCOPE AND CONTENT

Walter King Hoover donated his collection to the Albert Gore Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University in 1996.  Documents covering primarily the period from 1930 to 1985 and relating to the history of Smyrna, Tennessee comprise the majority of the 75 linear foot collection.

Materials in the Smyrna collection include business ledgers, promotional items, timetables, advertising materials, telephone books, church publications, club minutes, tax records, municipal records, land deeds, maps, cemetery relocation records, family genealogical documents, Civil War histories and documents, political campaign literature, school sports record books, yearbooks, school newsletters, cheerleader uniforms, 19th Century textbooks, memorabilia from shows/fairs and political campaigns, World War I and II collectibles, newspaper clippings, and over 4500 photographs.  The Nashville portion of the collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and photographs in series paralleling the Smyrna section.  A separate binder contains thumbnail photograph images.  Because photographs span all series, researchers may wish to search the photo database, searching by keyword. Maps and blueprints are separately catalogued and textbooks, other books, and equestrian items are inventoried apart from the general container listing.
