Born 26 January 1910 in Cleburne, Texas, Walter King Hoover was the second child of Edwin Francis and Bessie Lee King Hoover, both from Middle Tennessee. By 1913, the family had moved to Smyrna, Tennessee, where Hoover spent the rest of his life. He married Margaret Elizabeth Denny of Nashville in October 1937 at Scarritt College Chapel. They had three children, Walter Denny, Frances Jean, and Sue Margaret. |

Hoover worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps for thirteen months before joining his uncle, Walter Harris King, in his Smyrna mortuary business in the mid-1930s. Walter King Hoover purchased the concern in 1942, renaming it Hoover Funeral Home. In 1968, Hoover published A History of the Town of Smyrna, Tennessee based on his memories and years of collecting historical materials on various aspects of the town's heritage. After donating much of his collection to the Gore Center in 1996, Hoover published Volume II of Smyrna's history. Walter King Hoover died at the age of 92 on April 19, 2002. |
