Margaret Lindsley Warden, equine reporter for the Tennesseean for 55 years, remembers what it was like for a woman reporter:

"Yes, I remember the first Iroquois.  The grounds were not ready at all, but they had it anyway.  I don't think I ever reported that.  You see, I went, but I don't think I ever reported it.  You see, when the men and the boys on the sports staff--they didn't know what a horse show was.  They did know what a race was.  So when there was a race involved, they were going to cover that.  I wasn't even asked to cover it.  No, they weren't going to have my name signed to something that they thought they knew something about."
