Jim Staley shares details of the development of the horticultural history of the MTSU campus. "Dr. New did a really nice job on MTSU's campus and he worked there for many years. He collected the cultivars. He was really interested in the improved varieties of plants. So, he had quite a collection. Just crab apples alone, we had over sixty different kinds. That's remarkable to have one campus with that range of say one particular plant material that has that many cultivars. He did not plant as much native material as I did when I came. I like both, and I think the natives like the sugar maples are to me more attractive with a wide range of color." |
