Mary Scales remembers her teaching career and reflects on the years  that she and her husband Robert served on the Murfreesboro City Council.

"That was beginning of my teaching career--to try to understand your students.  And from that point on, my teaching strategy was getting to know.  There is a reason why a child acts like he or she acts.  And that was the beginning of my knowing how to be a good teacher.  And I would tell my student teachers, 'There is something good about that child.  You might have to take his shoes and socks off and look under his feet, but it's something there.'"
