William Pickron (standing)
Army Air Corps (USAF)

William Pickron explains his choice to be a WWII fighter pilot.

"Why I wanted to be a fighter pilot is there's a little difference, I think, in the attitude.  The bomber pilot has a crew, maybe anywhere from four to ten people, and he's got someone to do this, someone to do that.  We [fighter pilots] did our own navigation, our own gun controls, we did field management.  Everything was up to you.  You depended only on yourself."
