Burns Phillips was a Marine in WWII.  He shares memories of his training.

"It was thorough and good.  I went, we went, to San Diego for training for what we call boot training.  It was very thorough.  It was tough on us and everything, but it was thorough.  And I became a machine gunner, and we could dismantle a machine gun blindfolded and put it back.  It was good training."
