 Stan Murphy, an Upward Bound student at MTSU, remembers the Upward Bound program, playing football for MTSU, faculty members, and the racial climate of the campus during the seventies.

"He [Beryl West] was one of those professors during a very difficult time that kind of had no problem with going over the color barrier and saying things that you needed to know and understand--things that were going on politically, things that were going on within the institution, things that were going on in the world, things that you could do and that you could accomplish. But here is what you need to do, and I want to help you."
