Robert LaLance remembers events from his 30+-year career at
MTSU.
"But MTSU was very typical of higher education in those years in that there were a lot of parietal kinds of rules. There was a lot of assumptions that the school and its staff stood in the place of parents when they sent their students to Murfreesboro to go to college. And that was a hot issue in the late '60s and early '70s, and it didn't take Mel Scarlett long to realize he had to do something to keep from letting hotter heads prevail and not having the nice smooth transition that historically we can look back on and say it was good." |
