Ben Hutcherson

Ben Hutcherson recalls some of his experiences as a truck driver in WWII. Question:

Did you see combat? "Yup, from the truck. I didn't see -- I didn't walk with a rifle on my back, but I came under fire just like anybody else. And, at first, when we first got in France, the Germans had a good -- still had a good Air Force, and, of course, they were after those trucks. I've been strafed at different times, never hit, but I pulled off the road and hit the ditch several times. But, I learned how to do it. You see that plane coming spewing his bullets, wait till he gets right there, then pull your truck off the the road. He can't turn that airplane quick, you know, so he'd go right by you."
