James Elkins served with the 276th Combat Engineers and describes the bridge work his unit did during WWII.

"Every bridge had demolition charges wired and ready to blow either by the Germans or us.  If they got to advancing, we would blow the bridge.  If we got to pushing on the Germans, they'd blow them.  Every bridge was blowed-out nearly.  That's why we had to build so many bridges."
