Bertha Chrietzberg recalls WWII, her polio treatment at Hot
Springs, and the MTSU campus while she (HPERS) and her husband (ROTC &
Math) worked for the University (1960s - '70s - '80s). She also
discusses her continued involvement in environmental issues and the
development of Murfreesboro's Greenway. "[One important issue during that time] was the Vietnam War because [. . .] some of the students who had trained under him [Lt. Col. Chrietzberg, ROTC] [. . .] were killed in Vietnam. They were very young people, of course. And so we had to go to funerals, and he also had to notify parents. So he would have to dress up in his uniform, and go to somebody's house, and let them know that their son had been killed in Vietnam. That was a very hard time. It was very hard for him, and it was very hard for me to see that happening because my husband had been in two wars and had come through without injury--which was just amazing. So it was very had to have to go to these funerals and see these young brides, who had been left behind and now had a baby, and their husbands had been killed." |
