Clifford Caplinger explains why he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps.

"Well, I growed up a poor boy.  When they called me, I was nineteen.  When they called me for the CCs, I was plowin' corn for fifty cents a day.  So you know how poor I was......My dad died when I was---he died in '29---I was fifteen, I guess....So I went to CC to have something for my mother.  You know they sent twenty-five dollars to her.  I got five."
