Richard Palmer recalls how the Palmer Wholesale Company got its start in 1939. |
[My brother] James had borrowed $250.00from a bank. My dad went on his note. And I had an insurance policy, New York Life insurance policy, that had about $250.00 cash value. I cashed that insurance policy and got $250.00 and we came to Murfreesboro with $500.00. [Our first business was] on Vine Street, one block off the square. It was on the right at that first intersection, just a short walk from the square. Our "MO" was to go to Nashville with a pickup truck and get a load of fresh vegetables off the square....fresh produce...six or eight months the farmer's market was on the square in Nashville and we worked off that. I would go down at 3:00 in the morning and get a load of fresh vegetables and we would have it sold by 7:00. |
