Vincent DeGeorge tells the story of how his father immigrated to the United States and became a businessman in Murfreesboro. |
Daddy came over here about 1900 or somewhere along there. He landed in New Orleans. He didn't go through Ellis Island. First he worked in the sugar cane fields, cutting sugar cane and then he went up to Kansas and worked on the railroad a while. And then in 1903 or 1904 he worked at the St. Louis World's Fair. Daddy learned to make taffy and peanut brittle at the World's Fair. Then he went to Nashville and opened a little grocery store there. He said they was doing what they called a "panic" same as a depression, so he finally sold the grocery store. He heard that this place in Murfreesboro was for rent.
