Albert Gore House of Representatives Collection

The Albert Gore House of Representatives Collection consists of approximately 12.5 linear feet of papers created from the time of Albert Gore’s election to the United States House of Representatives in 1938 until the end of his tenure in that body in 1952.

This political collection is arranged by series and sub-series. The greatest volume dates from 1941 through 1952. The collection contains WSM radio transcripts of Albert Gore’s weekly broadcasts, personal correspondence, WW II topics, speeches, press releases, information about post offices, ephemera, and general files. The General Files series, the Speeches series, and the Broadcast series are the largest portions of this political collection.

Senator Gore has assigned his copyrights and literary rights to this collection to the public through Middle Tennessee State University. All researchers have equal access to materials in the collection subject to restrictions published in the individual series descriptions.

Series Descriptions

Series 1: Broadcast, 1940-1951 (5 boxes, 115 folders)

The Broadcast series is arranged chronologically by year. This series contains transcripts of Albert Gore’s weekly broadcasts on WSM. The WSM transcripts include information pertaining a variety of subjects such as WWII, the GI Bill, the President’s National Health Insurance Plan, the atomic bomb, TVA, foreign policy, economic issues, military aid to post-war Europe, the organization of NATO, and the Korean War. This series also contains correspondence.

Series 2: Personal Correspondence, 1951-1952 (1 box, 13 folders)

Personal correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the last names and then chronologically by year. This series contains correspondence from Bernard Baruch, E.H. Crump, Clifford Davis, Loye E. Miller, Frank Wilson, Jack Woodall, and various letters about Cordell Hull’s resignation.

Series 3: Press Releases, 1939-1944 (1 box, 2 folders)

The Press Releases series is arranged chronologically by year. This series contain releases from Representative Gore’s office. The press releases include information about economic issues, public health, farmers and legislation, the G.I. Bill, foreign trade, Cordell Hull, and the Fair Labor and Standards Act.

Series 4: Writings, 1939-1949 (2 boxes, 31 folders)

The Writings series is arranged chronologically by year. This series contains county newspaper articles, newspaper releases, and correspondence written by Representative Gore. This series contains information about neutrality, Adolph Hitler and the German Empire, federal funds, TVA, work relief, economic issues, WPA Appropriation Bill, oil, and others.

Series 5: Speeches, 1940-1952, (6 boxes, 163 folders)

The Speeches series is arranged alphabetically by topic. This series contains several public speeches that Albert Gore made before Congress and various organizations such as the TN Burley Tobacco Grower’s Association, Rotary Club, Memphis Lions Club, 4-H, and others. Albert Gore covered various topics in his speeches which include the Post-war Role of Congress, Inflation and Price Control, TVA, G I Bill of Rights, Social Security, Communism, Presidential Term Limits, Taxes, and the Atomic Energy Commission.

Series 6: General Files, 1941-1952 (12 boxes, 226 folders)

The General Files series is arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by folder topic. This series contains invitations and engagements, correspondence, Congressional Directories, and requests. In addition, this series has information pertaining to Tennessee counties, Tennessee’s rivers, the Federal Communications Commission, the Department of the Interior, the IRS, Oak Ridge, the National Production Authority, the Naval Supply Depot, the Justice Department, the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Commission, Future Savings & Loan Association, drainage, and federal judgeships.

Series 7: Post Offices, 1939-1952 (1 box, 25 folders)

The Post Offices series is arranged alphabetically by folder topic. This series contains information about the Buffalo Valley Post Office, Byrdstown-Ravescroft, proposed buildings, appointed positions, routes, post office sites, and Red Boiling Springs—Wolf River.

Series 8: Miscellaneous, 1940-1942 (4 boxes, 17 folders)

The Miscellaneous series has no arrangement. This series contains the Congressional Record with Gore’s Notations and information about printer plates, and general files.
