SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series 1: Correspondence, 1942-1947 (108 Folders)
The items in this series are arranged in alphabetical order by title and consist of various correspondences to and from James Gillespie. Some of the topics covered in the series are: airport site proposals, aircraft parts companies, and vendor correspondences.

Series 2: Accounts & Ledgers, 1942-1947 (91 Folders, 3 items)
This series consists of items documenting unpaid and paid invoices to Gillespie Airways, receipts from various purchases, and other records related to companies selling and buying plane equipment. The files are arranged in alphabetical order.

Series 3: Logs & Logbooks, 1942-1945 (20 Folders, 13 items)
The items in this series are arranged in alphabetical order and contain aircraft inspection logs, engine logs, a pilot flight record, various student flight charts, and cash receipts and sales.

Series 4: Advertisements, 1940s (39 Folders)
This series provides a variety of aviation related advertisements and is arranged in alphabetical order. The advertisements depict products such as an Air Corps Bomber Jacket, airplane sales, lapel airplane emblems, and sales of new types of airplanes.

Series 5: Clippings, 1940s (10 Folders)
The files in this series contain a variety of news clippings from different sources such as the Tennesseean and the Nashville Banner. The clippings are arranged in alphabetical order.

Series 6: Flight Charts & Maps, 1940s, (2 Folders)
This series contains a map of McKeller Airport in Jackson, Tennessee, the Cockrile Bend Airport Site and the Gillespie Airport Site.

Series 7: Reports, 1942-1945 (113 Folders)
The items in this series contain Civil Aeronautics Airplane Inspection reports on individual airplanes, Civil Aeronautics Board Safety bulletins, Defense Plant Corporation Inspection reports, Civil Aeronautics Board investigations on aircraft operations, and materials on instruction flights that were reported by the Civil Aeronautics Board. The files are arranged alphabetically by title and date.

Series 8: Artifacts, 1940s (31 items)
This box contains a varied assortment of items that were collected by James Gillespie. Some of the materials include: Gillespie Airways notepads, Aircraft Sales & Service notepads,  2 pen and ink sets, pressure gauges, and coupon booklets.

Series 9: Publications, 1940-1950 (76 Folders)
The items in this series are arranged alphabetically and include booklets on airport construction paving and runways, copies of programs from the “All-Dixie Annual Air Show” at Lowell Field in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a Pilot Ground Crew Signals booklet, a Pilot’s Airplane Manual from September, 1940, and many other aviation related materials.

Series 10: Serial Publications, 1943-1955 (292 Folders)
The materials in this collection are arranged alphabetically by title and consist of various periodicals and newsletters that are related to aviation. Some of the periodical titles include: AERO Digest, Aviation Week, Aviation Magazine, and Flight Magazine.

Series 11: Oversize, 1943-1973 (21 items)
The items in this box include a variety of large materials that could not fit in a regular size box. Some of the materials in this series are: a business document certificate that belonged to Gillespie, posters such as the “Standard Aircraft Taxi Signals,” “The Birdman’s Perch,” and the “Vulee Vengeance Dive Bombers in 1942.” In addition, there are some copies of the Rutherford Courier, newspaper that relates to aviation in the Middle Tennessee area.

The aviation photographs that were owned by Gillespie are stored separately in the Photograph Collection at the Albert Gore, Sr., Research Center.
