Historical Context |
| Smyrna's
schools fit into the larger context of rural and local
schools. |

| Lesson
Ideas |
| 1.
Students can use old school yearbooks to write about Smyrna's early
schools. For instance, students can create a fictional story based
on the information gained from this website and other sources on what it
was like to be a student in a certain time period. This activity
may also include interviewing former students of the school. |
|
| 2.
Students can use maps and old photos to try to locate the sites
of former schools and then see what the property looks like
today. |
| |
| |
| Other
Sources |
| Smyrna
library has publications of the Rutherford County Historical Society
that include information about local schools. The Hoover
collection at the Gore Center includes photos and information about the
Rock School and a number of other small local schools. Also, the
first volume of Walter King Hoover's history of Smyrna includes a
chapter on schools. |
