In 1976, fire raged through the old rock school.  The building burned beyond repair and was demolished in 1978.

The legacy of the school still lives on in Smyrna.  The new Smyrna public library, built on the old school's site, includes the Old Rock School Park.  The park centers around a section of the school's wall that was uncovered and restored.
