Throughout the years, a number of schools served the citizens of Smyrna. But one school stood the longest as a fixture in the community. Referred to by most as the Old Rock School, Smyrna's first high school opened as a public school in 1912. The school operated at times as both elementary and high school until it closed in 1976. The following is a timeline of key events related to the history of the Old Rock School. |

| 1893 - Smyrna Fitting School opened as a small private school |
| 1912 - County School Board re-opened the Fitting School as a public school |
| 1920 - Old wood building demolished and a new stone building constructed |
| 1932 - Fire destroyed stone building; school rebuilt using old stone walls |
| 1960 - New high school opened; Old Rock School used as an elementary school |
| 1976 - School burned and later demolished |
