Nissan Breaks Ground in Smyrna

Even before Nissan broke ground, they began hiring employees.  Due to the economic situation at the time, many people eagerly sought work with Nissan.

On February 3, 1981, Nissan broke ground for its new facility.  However, protestors opposed the use of a non-union construction company and the existence of a Japanese owned company in America.

Despite the concerns of a few, support was overwhelming for the Nissan plant.  The Tennessee state legislature even voted a resolution of support for Nissan.  Construction began on the site and continued for two years until the Smyrna plant produced its first truck.
