Even before Nissan broke ground, they began hiring employees. Due to the economic situation at the time, many people eagerly sought work with Nissan. |

On February 3, 1981, Nissan broke ground for its new facility. However, protestors opposed the use of a non-union construction company and the existence of a Japanese owned company in America. |

Despite the concerns of a few, support was overwhelming for the Nissan plant. The Tennessee state legislature even voted a resolution of support for Nissan. Construction began on the site and continued for two years until the Smyrna plant produced its first truck. |
