Though the closing of Sewart Air Base left a gap in the economy of Smyrna, the city leaders made great efforts to fill that gap. From 1970 to 1980, several industries moved into Smyrna, including the new Smyrna airport. But in 1980, when Nissan Motor Corporation began looking for an American site for its new plant, Smyrna's city leaders saw a golden opportunity.
