Page served three more years until a conflict over liquor license fees contributed to the questioning of Smyrna's charter.  In the early months of 1881, the state of Tennessee repealed Smyrna's charter.  Despite the change in legal status, the town continued to grow.

Though a July 1913 fire destroyed several downtown businesses, the town rebuilt and moved forward.  In the years following the loss of the charter, Smyrna gained the Hager cotton gin, new schools, and a telephone line connection.  Finally, in 1915, the town was ready to reapply for incorporation.
