Early History
 

Though settlers had moved into the Smyrna area by the beginning of the nineteenth century, the town really began its growth when the railroad added a stop in Smyrna.  The following is a brief timeline of the early history of Smyrna - from the construction of the depot to the town's second incorporation in 1915.

1851 - Smyrna Depot opened as a stop on the Nashville-Chattanooga line
1869 - Smyrna incorporated with Joseph Engles as the first mayor
1881 - the State of Tennessee repealed the Smyrna incorporation charter
1915 - Smyrna incorporated for the second time
