LOCAL HISTORY IN THE CLASSROOM

Smyrna Air Base

Larger Historical Context:

Smyrna Air Base obviously fits in with any study of World War II, but also can be incorporated into a study of military expansion and downsizing or how government jobs impact a city.  The base represents how worldwide events like World War II, Korea, the Cold War, and the Vietnam war can effect a small town.

Lesson Ideas:
1.  Have students use sources on this website and/or at the library and Gore Center to report on the impact of the air base on Smyrna

2.  Have students interview citizens that worked on the air base and share their findings with the class
3.  Encourage students to find other local connects to international wars - such as the internment of German prisoners near Tullahoma, Tennessee and the World War II troop maneuvers held near this area.

Other Sources:
Smyrna public library has excellent resources on the air base - including photos, newspaper clippings, and narrative histories.  The Hoover collection at the Gore Research Center also includes a large section of air base memorabilia.  The Gore Center also has a collection of photos of the World War II troop maneuvers.
