In the early years of World War II, the United States military sought to expand and create new training sites. In 1941, the Department of Defense chose Smyrna as the location of a new training base for pilots because of its nearby railroad and highway transportation and favorable climate. The following is a timeline of key events related to Smyrna Air Base. |

| December 1941 - Base established as training center for B-24 and B-17 aircraft |
| July 1947 - Smyrna Air Base deactivated following World War II |
| August 1948 - Base reactivated under newly established United States Air Force |
| March 15, 1950 - Smyrna Air Force Base renamed in honor of Allan J. Sewart Jr. |
| December 9, 1965 - Secretary of Defense announced the closing of Sewart AFB |
| March 9, 1970 - The last Hercules C-130 left the runway in Smyrna |
