The State Board of Education approved the recommendation of J. Howard Warf, Commissioner of Education, for the elevation of MTSC to University status in November 1964. "It is believed that this change will greatly strengthen the position of the institution in its growth and development", Dr. Quill Cope stated. The state legislature approved the elevation of the school to University status on February 16, 1965.

Since 1911 more than 70,000 students have graduated from MTSU. The growth of MTSU during its 88-year history has seen the institution evolve from a two-year Normal School, built on a corn field, to a flourishing, major university.
