RCHS Collection

Series 1: Publications
This series contains various publications collected by the RCHS with dates ranging from 1894-1982. These publications include journals, magazines, books, brochures, pamphlets, yearbooks, phone directories among other kinds of publications mostly having a historical relationship with Rutherford County and the Middle Tennessee area.

Series 2: Subject Files
This large series of files contains a wealth of research materials on many facets of Rutherford County history. The files have been divided into sub-series for easy reference. The sub-series are Rutherford County History, Murfreesboro History, People/Families, Cemeteries, Schools, Communities, Churches, Civil War, Tennessee/Nashville, Military, Poems/Stories, Business, Clubs & Fraternities, and National Events.

Series 3: Scrapbooks
This series contains 3 scrapbooks. The first contains clippings from Nashville Banner, 1911-1916, many stories by Will Allen Dromgoole and possibly belonged to Will Allen Dromgoole herself. The second scrapbook seems to have belonged to Ellen Spence, the daughter of John Spence (Author of Annals of Rutherford County). It contains clippings of stories, poems, articles, drawings, a few needlework patterns, references to Soule College, - dates from late 1850’s to 1876. The third scrapbook contains various poems, songs, programs – only dates are 1830’s.

Series 4: Newspapers
This series contains newspapers and clippings, most with a local connection. There are newspapers from Rutherford County and Nashville from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s including several copies of “Accent” which was a supplement to the Daily News Journal. The “Accents” are predominantly from 1977 and 1978 with a few issues from 1976 and 1979. There are several special themed editions of the DNJ including the “Progress Edition,” “Threshold: Rutherford Co. facing the 1980s,” “Women’s Edition,” There are a few DNJ and local papers from the 1951 MacArthur visit to Murfreesboro as well as some New York newspapers surrounding 1980 presidential election. Finally, there are DNJ’s from 1941 (2 of note are pre and post pearl harbor-12/3/41 and 12/10/41).

Series 5: Memorabilia
The memorabilia series contains posters, commemorative plates, and decals, among other miscellaneous items.

Series 6: Maps
This series contains various highway, development, street, zoning, and business maps of Rutherford County, Lavergne, and surrounding area. Some are copies of early 19^th century maps.

Series 7: Business Records
This series contains many ledger books and receipts from various businesses in or around Rutherford County. Some of the owners are known and some are not, but the dates range from 1907 to 1947.

Series 8: Municipal Records:
This series contains various records relating to Rutherford County with dates ranging from 1960 to 1984. Items include soil conservation surveys in the form of aerial photos of Rutherford County taken in 1937-38 and 1963, election returns, blueprints, and property indexes.
