Adgent Collection

  • The Adgent Collection covers the period from 1940 to 1983 and relates to business, farming, educational, and political topics in Marshall County, TN.  The collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, ephemera, maps, blueprints, information booklets, and serials collected by the Adgent Family.

Alexander Collection (Robert Alexander)

  • The Robert E. Alexander Collection includes correspondences from 1940-1945 that were written by Alexander to his mother, to his father, to his sister and her husband, two personal diaries from the 1940s, and publications such as his autobiography entitled It Happened Sorta . . .Like This. In addition, there are photographs of India and Alexander’s family.

  • Correspondence, publications, minutes, scrapbooks, since 1913.

APTA Collection (Rutherford County)

  • The materials in this collection pertain to the Rutherford County Chapter of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities.  The bulk of the collection consists of operational records such as minutes, state and chapter bylaws, treasury reports, correspondence, annual reports, publications, and membership rosters.  Miscellaneous items, such as brochures, computer data, and other organizations’ bylaws and membership rosters, complete the collection. 

Baskin Collection (Robert Baskin)

  • Correspondence, research notes, photographs, genealogies and family histories of Rutherford County families dating from the early 19th century, especially the Woodruff, Baskin, and Rideout families.
Battle of Nashville Monument Collection
  • Correspondence, press clippings, rededication programs, pictures, organizational contributions, and plans for the restoration of the Battle of Nashville Monument.

Bohannon Music Club Collection (Frances Bohannon)

  • The Frances Bohannon Music Club collection covers the period from 1924 to 2001 and relates to the general activities of the club.  Materials in the collection range from the minutes and organizational records of Bohannon Music Club meetings to concert programs, yearbooks, and scrapbooks. 

Business & Professional Women's Club Collection

  • History of the organization since the founding in 1936.  

Charity Circle Collection

  • Newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, and other documentation from 1910 to the early 1980s about the activities of the Murfreesboro Charity Club.  Particularly useful for those interested in the history of philanthropy, women, and childcare.
Community Collection
  • Our community collection is composed of various items that we receive from numerous sources.  These are items that do not make up a collection in themselves, but pertain to regional history.  This collection has a wealth and breadth of local resources.

Craddock Study Club Collection

  • Organizational minutes, yearbooks, and scrapbooks relating the history and objectives of the literary group. 

Donnell-Rucker Collection

  • Correspondence and business papers of Nashville socialite, daughter of 19th century Murfreesboro physician.  The collection also contains documentation of Marymont, the family's Rutherford County plantation house

Flowers Collection (Cecil Flowers)

  • Materials regarding the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni (NACCCA) collected and donated by a CCC veteran and first Vice President of the NACCCA

Gaither Collection (Jerry Gaither)

  • Three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings about Rutherford County Schools from 1986-1990 during Mr. Gaither's tenure as Rutherford County School Superintendent

Gillespie Airport Collection (J.D. Gillespie)

  • Business records of Nashville commercial flight center and of its flight instructor training program that operated during World War II. Many women were among those enrolled in the flight instructor training program

  • Outdoor Pursuits Scrapbook Collection - Collection of avid sportsman and novelist Emmett Gowen's various hunting, saltwater fishing, and freshwater fishing magazine articles from the 1940s and 1950s.

  • Records of MTSU History professor as Trustee of the Sam Davis Home

Hayes Collection (Floyd Hayes)

  • Mostly business records of Floyd Hayes and his family in Dekalb County, particularly in Smithville, TN

Hillenmeyer Collection (Marianne Bevil Hillenmeyer)

  • Photographs and research notes regarding Works Progress Administration murals in Tennessee Post Offices

Hollon Collection (James C. Hollon)

  • Commemorative World War II Collection - James Hollon, World War II veteran, collected various articles and publications dealing with D-Day in particular and World War II in general.  This collection is mostly composed of commemorative materials and particularly focuses on the Allied Invasion of Normandy, France, on D-Day (June 6, 1944). 
Hoover Collection (Margaret Denny Hoover)
  • Smyrna, Tennessee Collection.  Margaret Denny Hoover (1915-2006) was a local history and genealogy buff.  This collection contains her genealogy research files for the Denny family.  Margaret Denny Hoover was married to Walter King Hoover
Hoover Collection (Walter King Hoover)
  • Smyrna, Tennessee Collection.  Extensive documentation of businesses, churches, schools, fraternal organizations, families, public offices, recreation, and just about every other of area of activity from the late nineteenth century to the 1980s. Collected by Smyrna businessman Walter King Hoover, the materials  make Smyrna  one of the best  documented towns in the United States

  • Community activists and MTSU supporters the Jones Collection contains scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper clippings, and civic service bulletins and correspondence during the 1950s, including Mr. Jones mayoral term
Kerr Collection of Kerr Drugstore Records (Messick Collection)
  • Early twentieth-century records from the basement of the last drugstore to operate on the Murfreesboro Courthouse square. The collection consists of ledgers, day books, inventory listings, and drug directories dating from 1930 to 1972.  The collection also contains an invoice book from 1886 and an undated book of typed and hand-written pharmacy remedies

Kiger Collection (Jean Kiger)

  • This collection consists of two scrapbooks and assorted documents that primarily pertain to Kiger's time as Assistant Provost General at the Smyrna Air Base during World War II.

King Collection (Adeline King)

  • Correspondence and Literary works of  Miss Adeline King from the early 1920s to the 1990s.  The correspondence includes letters to more than one  hundred servicemen and servicewomen during the Second World War.  She was secretary to the president and CEO of the  Nashville Bridge Company and editor of that company's in-house magazine.  She also wrote poetry, essays, character sketches, patriotic and religious tracts, plays, and newspaper columns,  mostly pertaining to events in her hometown of Smyrna, Tennessee. 
King, J.M. Collection (James Moore King)
  • The James Moore King Collection consists of letters, legal document, and genealogical notes by or regarding Colonel James Moore King, his family members, and decedents. Colonel King was a prominent citizen of Rutherford County who lived in Murfreesboro from 1809 until 1877.

King, Sarah Collection (Sarah King)

  • The Sarah King Collection contains materials pertaining to the Collier and King families.  Mrs. King, a distant relative of the Colliers, received the Colliers’ late nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs, letters, financial documents, and business records as they were passed down through her family.  The second portion of the collection consists of primary sources that document Mrs. King’s activities in the Daughters of the American Revolution during the 1970s and 1980s in relation to the Rutherford County Sesquicentennial Celebration of 1976, the Sam Davis Home in Smyrna, and the Treaty of Paris Celebration of 1983. 

Licker Collection (Licker Family)

  • Personal correspondence, photographs, and family papers of the Sam and Sarah Licker family of Murfreesboro, especially of their daughter Ethel Licker Haney.  The collection contains much celebrity correspondence including that with her lifelong friend, Jean Faircloth (Mrs. Douglas Mac Arthur) and with Hollywood celebrities with whom Ms. Haney became acquainted while working in the  Hollywood fashion industry during the 1930s and 1940s.  There are also items from Ethel's sisters: Bertha Licker and Esther Licker Maxwell.

McFarland Collection (John McFarland)

  • Memorabilia covering the period from 1927 to 1982 and relating to McFarland’s experiences as a journalist, as a community volunteer, and as a supporter of Middle Tennessee State University
Middle Tennessee Oral History Collection
  • The Middle Tennessee Oral History Project seeks to record the memories of people who live in or have roots in the region.  Topics of particular interest include Middle Tennessee State University, African-American community leadership in Murfreesboro, veterans, state and local politics, women's organizations, farming and farm organizations, planning and economic development, and medical history.

Mt. Moriah Masonic Collection (Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge, Murfreesboro)

  • Photocopies of research materials and of the album created by Harry Dement to honor past leaders of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge of Murfreesboro

Oaklands Association Collection

  • Minutes of the Oaklands Association’s board meetings from 1959 to 2006, Oaklands Association scrapbooks, clippings, and photocopies of research files that cover the history of Oaklands mansion and the families that lived there. Photocopies of articles and files relating to Oaklands relationship to the Civil War, general Murfreesboro history, and Oaklands mortgage history

  • Materials regarding the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni (NACCCA)

Riggan Collection (Vickie L. Riggan)
  • The Vickie L. Riggan Collection includes history essays written by Riggan, books related to World War II and American women in uniform, magazine covers and product advertisements dating from the 1940s, movie posters from the 1940s, songbooks, recruiting posters, war and soldier memorabilia and audio/visual materials.

Rutherford County Historical Society (RCHS)

  • The materials of the Rutherford County Historical Society, usually referred to as RCHS within our repository, are divided into two distinct groups, each having its own set of series.
  • The first group is the RCHS Records, which include organizational records, publications created by the RCHS, audio tapes, and microfilm. These records span the years 1966 to 1999.
  • The second group is the RCHS Collection and unlike the Records group, it consists of materials collected
    rather than created by the RCHS. The dates range from the mid-19th century to late 20th century, with the vast majority being from the 1970s.

Rutledge Collection (Louisa Daniel Rutledge)

  • The Louisa Daniel Rutledge Collection spans the years 1883 to 1924.  Her diary, begun in 1899, records her thoughts about her life and information about her parents and grandparents.  The collection also includes two family photographs from 1924, a small amount of correspondence, two wills (including the will of Jack Daniel), and miscellaneous family papers.

Smyrna Hospital Auxiliary Collection

  • The Smyrna Hospital Auxiliary held annual membership teas, teas to welcome new doctors to the hospital, and organized an annual fundraiser, the Christmas bazaar, to purchase new equipment for the Smyrna Hospital.  The collection covers the organization's activities during the period from 1968 to 1984.  The collection materials include financial reports, a hospital disaster plan, job descriptions, minutes, a newsletter, and a scrapbook.

Tennessee College for Women Collection

  • Tennessee College for Women was founded in 1906 and operated for forty-six years to educate women in both mind and spirit.

Tennessee Folkfest Collection

Tennessee State Fire Service School Collection

  • This collection includes annual reports, training booklets, class notes, information bulletins, and books related to fire service training and the school's operation from 1944 through 1967.

WAPB  Local History Collection

  • Audio tapes of the Uncle Dave Macon Hour regional history broadcasts on WAPB  circa 1996. 

Weiler Collection (Patsy Weiler)

  • Materials collected for articles on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and its legacy in the United States and in Tennessee.

Weise Collection (Aaron Weise)

  • The Aaron L. Weise Collection includes documents covering primarily the period from 1918 to 1929 and relate to Weise's experiences as an aviator during World War I and as a minstrel performer.

Womack Collection (Bob Womack)

  • Research materials collected  by MTSU Professor Bob Womack on the subjects of evolution, Civil War, and equestrian history.

Woman's Club of Murfreesboro Collection

  • The Woman's Club of Murfreesboro Collection includes documents covers the period from 1916 to 1996 and relates to the general activities of the club.  The organization’s initial endeavors in partnership with the Library Association are particularly noteworthy.  Materials in this collection range from the minutes of the club's board meetings from 1916-1984 to extensive presidential reports, treasury reports, financial information, committee work, and various other records.  An 1892 Library Association and Literary Club catalogue is the oldest item in the collection.
