BACKGROUND SKETCH
The Battle of Nashville monument was created by May Winston Caldwell, her husband, and the Ladies Battlefield Association. In 1911 this group secured four acres of the original battleground at Franklin Road and Thompson Lane in Nashville. On this land in 1927, the Ladies Battlefield Association erected a memorial commemorating the struggle between Union and Confederate soldiers who fought in the last major western theatre campaign of 1864. In 1974 a strong storm badly damaged the monument and left it in bad condition. In the mid-1990’s an extensive restoration, relocation, and rededication of the monument was completed, again making it symbol for the history of Nashville.
